Missing Lateral Incisors

09/20/2010

Question:

My three children, like myself, are missing their upper lateral incisors. My youngest, is quite resistent to the idea of orthordontic correction, as the rest of us have had. She identifies with her “special” look. What are the implications, medically, not cosmetically, of not pursuing treatment at all?

Answer:

Usually there are no health implications of not “correcting” for the lack of lateral incisors. However, it would be a good idea to discuss it with her dentist in case there is a significant problem with her bite that would be corrected during orthodontic treatment. You might also want to discuss the implications of postponing treatment.
