Esophageal stem cell transplant11/17/2010 |
My mother (54 years) has post corrosive esophageal stricture. Is there enough work done on stem cell to justify an esophageal transplant and what are the risks involved? Are there any other options apart from dialation and stomoch pull up?
Stomach pull up is the best option or a small bowel interposition. Esophageae transplant is not being done and the life-long risks of immuno-suppression (medication needed to prevent the body from rejecting the transplant) would far exceed the surgical risks. Other options do exist and should be discussed.
