Bleeding Gum with Puss

10/28/2010

Question:

Hi, I have an implant that replaces tooth # 8. I`m good floser, and keep my dental visits regular, every 6 months. On my last check up - there was nothing wrong, but a week ago, I started to have a swollen gum from the inside of tooth #8. It bleeds in the morning and I could see puss coming out when the gum is pressed. I have healthy gums everywhere else. I never had anything like it before, please advise!

Answer:

Obviously, it is hard to say without actually seeing the tooth and an x-ray, but it sounds like you have something called peri-implantitis. It is an inflammation around an implant that can lead to bone loss and implant failure. Unfortunately, if puss is coming out, it really doesn't sound like a good situation. I would visit your dentist as soon as possible.
