Pregnancy and Sore Throat Lozenges10/26/2010 |
Hi my wife is pregnant and she has sore throat and sometimes minor irritated cough. I want to know what kinds of safe throat lozenge for her to use. There are many kinds of over the counter throat lozenges for sore throat which contains menthol, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory agent and anesthetics like benzocaine. Which one is the safest ingredient?
Because the dose of benzocaine is very small, throat lozenges containing it are safe to use during pregnancy. As with anything during pregnancy, moderation is the key. The cough suppressant dextromethorphan found in many OTC cough products is also safe in pregnancy.
