Prognosis of Esophageal Cancer03/18/2008 |
What is the prognosis for Stage iv esophageal CA (adenocarcinoma) that has metastasized to the liver, both lungs and lymph nodes? Does participating in a phase II clinical study improve those rates? Are there other treatments for this stage (determined to be inoperable) available or just palliative treatment.
Unfortunately, the prognosis is poor, and the role of chemotherapy is not convincing. Essentially, Stage IV esophageal cancer is a non-curable yet treatable stage of this cancer. In general, treatment for Stage IV esophageal cancer is palliative chemotherapy, but it helps extend survival in patients who respond to it.There are some clinical trials that have been very interesting in their findings. As with all cancers, participating in one of these studies would be a better option if available. Participation in a study will at least help increase our knowledge of this devastating disease.
