Tahitian Noni Juice: Beneficial or Not?
Is there any information on the medical benefits of using Tahitian Noni Juice made by Morinda Inc. They claim it opens up the bodies cells and thus the entire body is able to function better.
Thanks for your question. Noni juice comes from the Hawaiin plant morinda citrifolia. It has been touted as an aid in healing skin conditions, bug bites, canker sores, joint dysfunction, arthritis and circulation problems. Like many other "miracle cures", it sounds too good to be true. However, there has been research done with noni juice in Hawaii. It does not pertain to arthritis and/or circulation conditions.
The research investigates noni juice, the immune system and cancer. The data from these studies may have been stretched to accomodate other medical conditions. Hirazumi, et. al did a study with noni juice and cancer in 1996. His research study is entitled Immunomodulation contributes to anticancer activity of morinda citrifolia fruit juice. It was published in the Proceedings of the Western Pharmacology Society in 1996, vol. 39, pages 7-9. There were similar studies done in 1975, but nothing more recent than 1996.
I was unable to locate this article to read it, so I cannot tell you if noni juice may be beneficial to you. The price for commercial noni juice is quite expensive ($14.00 for a 10 oz bottle). That will certainly add up if you drink the recommended dose three times per day! The brand made by Tahitian may be cheaper, but it may or may not contain adequate active noni juice. When it comes to disease prevention or cure, there is not one magical food that will save you.
The most promising and least expensive way to stay healthy is to eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables a day (5 total daily), limit fat (especially saturated fat) in your diet, exercise regularly, don`t smoke, and minimize stress in your life. Good Luck to you!
