New Fissure and First one Ever

11/14/2011

Question:

I just started bleeding from the rectum this morning – quite a lot. Even after three children (natural childbirths) I have never had hemorrhoids or any problems in that area. Now my youngest is 16 months and I am bleeding from my rectum. There is bright colored blood and a lot of it. Of course the first thing I did was grab a mirror; there were no hemorroids, but a tear. I researched fissures online and all the information states that there is pain, burning, itching; I have none of these symptoms. There is just bleeding from this tear that I can obviously see. Can this still be a fissure? If it is can I treat it myself or do I need to see a Dr. because there are no other symptoms?

Answer:

Painless bleeding from the anus can be due to many things. Some of the causes, like a hemorrhoid or a fissure, will usually heal on their own over time. Other things, like a polyp, or colitis, will not. The best way to know for sure what is causing your bleeding is to see a gastroenterologist or colorectal surgeon so you can be examined and correctly diagnosed.
