Thyroid Sonography Test Done

11/18/2011

Question:

I had a thyroid sonography done and the doctor prescribed Synthroid 25 MCG tablets. Does this mean I have hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.  The results said right lobe measured 4.3 x 1×1.8 cm. Left lobe 4.1x1x1.5cm. Thanks for your feedback.

Answer:

The fact that you were precribed Synthroid suggests that you have hypothyroidism – a condition in which the thyroid gland is making too little thyroid hormone. That’s what Synthroid is – thyroid hormone (the same thing that is made by your thyroid gland). The ultrasound seems pretty normal. The main reason for getting an ultrasound is to see if there are any nodules in the thyroid that might be thyroid cancers. Apparently your thyroid does not contain any nodules.
