Hemochromatosis

Low Ferritin, Hemochromatosis?

11/17/2011

Question:

I am a 40 year old female of completely Irish American descent. I have one copy of the C282Y gene. I have a history of low and low normal ferritin. I was diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure 5 years ago and can`t help wondering if I might have hemochromatosis. I know it is not likely but is there a chance that I might be storing more iron than you should?

Answer:

Thank you for visiting NetWellness. Since you have a low/low normal ferritin, it is unlikely that you have an iron overload.  If you have concerns and/or want peace of mind about this, you should discuss this with your primary care physician.

Best wishes.
