Circumcision03/06/1997 |
I am expecting a boy. What is the proportion of circumcised to uncircumcised male infants these days? What about the chance of penile cancer in adulthood for uncircumcised men? How much trauma does this procedure cause an infant boy?
Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin (the covering of the end of the penis) exposing the glans. The decision to circumcise an infant is often based on social, cultural, religious and family traditions. In the USA approximately 60 % of the male infants are circumcised. The 1989 American Academy of Pediatrics position paper on circumcision states the incidence of penile cancer is lower in circumcised men in the United States. Newborns do experience pain, and circumcision is painful. The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on the Fetus and Newborn and Committee on Drugs in 1987 published a policy endorsing the administration of local or systemic anesthesia to an infant undergoing surgical procedures. Studies have shown the use of topical Lidocaine effective without adverse effects noted. As a parent you need to be sure that all your questions regarding the circumcision are fully answered by your health care provider, ideally prior to delivery so that you can make an informed decision.
