Ear thermometer?

09/04/1998

Question:

Can you use a ear thermometer on a new born?

Answer:

The research regarding the use of a tympanic (ear) thermometer in the newborn is conflicting. However, research has found a good correlation between the results of both rectal and axillary temperatures. Before investing in a tympanic thermometer you should discuss this with your health care professional, and find their opinion regarding their use.
