Accolate and Chronic Asthma

03/26/1999

Question:

What are the indications for use of the new drug Accolate for chronic asthema?

Answer:

Accolate is indicated for mild persistent asthma and as an ancillary drug for patients with nasal polyps, asthma and aspirin sensitivity. The latter patients responds much better to Accolate and leukotriene antangonists than do other asthmatic patients. Comparative studies have shown that inhaled corticosteroids (such as flovent, vanceril, azmacort, pulmicort) are more effective than Accolate in the chronic treatment of mild to moderate asthmatic patients.
