Can pilonidal cyst be inherited?Is it that to be a birth defect? I was told that because my buttocks area did not come together exactly right at birth, this has to do with why I have this problem. I`ve been studying up on it and it says that usually obese people have it, I`m about 40 lbs. over weight, is that considered obese?? Please help, in 2 weeks I will be having surgery outpatient surgery to clean the cavity out to eliminate reoccurring pilonidal cysts.
A pilonidal cyst or sinus can either be a cyst (a small sac often containing fluid) or a sinus (a small opening or channel) that has some hair around it. Pilonidal cysts are quite common and are usually located in the midline of the coccyx (the tail bone area).Usually these cysts do not cause any problems. However, they can drain fluid and can form an abscess - an area of localized infection. If this occurs, the area may need to be opened up and drained. It sounds like that is what you are going to have done.
A pilonidal cyst is thought to be a birth defect. It does not seem to be inherited. These types of cysts can be found in any person, regardless of weight. However, increased amounts of weight, which usually means increased amounts of tissue - may cause more rubbing or friction at the site of the cyst and cause irritation.
