Scars from Chicken Pox

05/28/1999

Question:

I`m 42 and just had a case of Chicken Pox. It started about a week ago. Some scabs on my face came off this morning when I washed with soap and water in the shower. Will this cause scaring?

Answer:

Scars from chicken pox are not unusual, especially when the disease occurs in adults. I would suggest avoiding sun exposure of the healing lesions (and use sunblock), as this can cause damage to the new, healing skin. You may also wish to see a dermatologist to see if there are other ways to reduce the chances of scarring in your case.
