Sun Poisoning

06/09/1999

Question:

What exactly is "sun poisoning"?

Answer:

"Sun poisoning" is a general term used to refer to unusual skin eruptions or rashes which occur when someone is exposed to the sun. In some cases, the reaction occurs when the person is taking some medication which increases the skin`s sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. However, the exact cause of the red, itchy bumps needs to be determined for a given person. When medications are prescribed, the patient should always ask about whether increased sensitivity to the sun can occur. If this is possible, take precautions to avoid direct sun exposure. Unfortunately, this type of skin reaction can look like other reactions and the cause must be determined.
