Abnormal pap & HPV (07/23/2007 01:32PM) |
Follow up of LSIL — Colposcopy is recommended for women with low-grade lesions (LSIL) (see "Colposcopy" above). Treatment of LSIL — There are three options for management of LSIL: * Close follow-up with HPV testing after 12 months or repeat Pap smear at six and 12 months. * Treatment to remove or destroy the abnormal cells (See "Patient information: Treatment of abnormal Pap smears").

Pap smears (07/24/2006 11:43AM) |
| My Doctor told me because I am 71 years old, I no longer need a pap smear. In women over 70, who have had normal pap smear in the preceding years and are not at increased risk for cervical cancer, can cease with screening. Because the risk of cervical cancer is so low in this group, the risks such as invasive testing for a false positive test outweighs the benefits. | |

Can HPV go away? (03/20/2006 05:46PM) |
HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) infection is a sexually transmitted virus that is associated with both genital warts and cervical cancer. Different types of HPV have different effects: low risk types cause genital warts, whereas high risk types can cause cervical cancer. However, the standard of PAP smears has shifted so that we can now test for HPV on PAP smear results.

Minor bleeding during/post intercourse (02/07/2006 06:59PM) |
| I have minimal bleeding during sex: like you only know I`m bleeding when they pull out and the lights are on. Another common problem is cervical cancer or precancerous cells which can cause abnormal bleeding during intercourse. Trauma is another cause of bleeding during intercourse. | |

Alternatives to standard gynecological exam (08/10/2007 02:32PM) |
| The routine gyn exam screens for breast cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer and uterine cancer using the breast exam and mammogram if indicated by age, the Pap smear, the pelvic exam and a history of your vaginal bleeding respectively. There are no self-tests except for a self-breast exam, but even then it is important to have a clinical breast exam by a healthcare provider every year. The pelvic exam for ovarian cancer is the most cost- effective test we have for ovarian cancer. | |

Uterus didelphys (11/14/2006 02:00PM) |
| I was diagnosed with Uterus Didelphys (2 cervix, bicornate uterus and seperated vagina) about 15 years ago. Having a uterus didelphys does not put you at risk for any particular problems as you approach menopause. However, if you have two cervixes, you should have a Pap smear performed from each cervix when you are screened for cervical cancer. | |

Oral cancer from high risk HPV in women (07/09/2008 10:19AM) |
| My girlfriend tested positive for high risk HPV, but her cells have not gone through any change yet to cause cervical cancer. Can this transmit HPV to the mouth through oral sex and cause oral cancer in men? Some of the high risk HPV types have been associated with oral cancers. | |

Uterus infection (03/27/2006 10:34AM) |
| I am disgnosed with uterus infection, my gyne had done a paps smear test on me and it was under `Class 1` which means that I`m alright. A true infection of the uterus isn't associated with a risk of developing uterine cancer. Also, the Pap smear isn't designed to detect uterine cancer, but cervical cancer. |
