Sore tongue (12/11/2007 03:24PM)
I would presume that the symptoms being described may be related to what is referred to as "Burning Mouth Syndrome or BMS".

As I mentioned, BMS is a complex problem and may be the result or association of many different health problems, such as:

  • psychological dysfunction
  • depression
  • systemic and/or local conditions such as:
    • infection
    • medications
    • allergic reactions
    • hormonal imbalance
    • dry mouth(xerostomia)

to name just...

Question about swollen taste buds (06/01/2007 04:09PM)
If in fact, you have "swollen taste buds", they can result from:

  • stress
  • a reaction to too much acidic foods such as orange juice or tomatoes
  • an allergic reaction to a tooth paste or some other substance placed in the mouth, including a food or additive to a food
  • some type of an infection
  • dry mouth (though this is usually a burning sensation in the tongue)
  • and other physical conditions or side effects of medications.

Fear of needles during dentistry (08/03/2006 06:07PM)
I asked my dentist if he would numb my mouth first before injecting me, but he said that numbing me first would not help.

If your fear is stronger, you may need to get an oral sedative medicine from your dentist. You may have to see a different dentist who has been trained for this or your dentist may have to try and schedule for a dental anesthetist to come to the office.

At home remedies (09/06/2008 12:24PM)
Also, what is the best over the counter pain relief for an abscess?

No, unfortunately there are no good over-the-counter medicines for tooth abscesses.   Be sure your temperature does not go above 100 degrees and that you don't start vomiting.

Tiny blisters on roof of mouth (11/15/2007 02:03PM)
I woke up with tiny blisters on the roof of my mouth. If you have had herpes virus infection of the lip ("herpes labialis", also known as fever blister or cold sore), then you would not get this infection inside your mouth. When herpes involves the lining of the mouth, it is quite painful, and usually a fever is present.

Question about salty saliva (03/08/2007 03:59PM)
My saliva tastes like salt and alters the taste of food.

This certainly could represent the taste component of a relatively common condition known as burning mouth syndrome. With a taste phantom, the nerves that transmit information about taste are sending signals back to the brain that something salty is in the mouth, when in fact, there is no salt in the mouth at all.

Dental work and medicine - actenol (08/24/2007 03:51PM)

I am 72 years old and and have been prescribed Actenol by my orthopedic surgeon.

Actonel does not have any contraindication for dental treatment, as long as you are not having any possible side effects such as:

  • trouble swallowing
  • pain in the jaw articulation
  • or pain in the muscles of the neck and face.

Rarely it may cause delay in healing or infection after tooth extraction.

Teeth pulled and dentures put in (04/30/2006 07:49PM)
Ice does help take down the swelling, as will an anti-inflammatory medication.   The anti-inflammatory may be a part of the pain medication that he is taking.   Your pharmacist should also be able to tell you whether an anti-inflammatory is part of the pain medication.

Extremely loose teeth after new crowns (05/14/2004 01:05PM)
1) I had a post for an implant placed in the second to the last tooth location June 2003 (the crown has not yet been placed on this tooth as my dentist stated the crowns on the adjacent teeth must be placed before the crown for the implant) 2) I had crowns placed on each tooth on either side of this implant (Nov 2003) 3) Within days of having these new crowns placed, I began to have extreme pain on this lower side of my jaw. The teeth with the new crowns are still extremely loose and it ...

Decision about implants (01/08/2001 01:05PM)
If pain is not a major factor in dental implants, what are the key factors that I, as a patient, should be considering to decide for implants and against dentures? With implants, depending on how many you get and the type of prosthesis used to restore the implants, the chewing efficiency can go up to approximately that of having natural teeth. Many people can wear upper dentures with good success but lower dentures usually present more problems.
