| I have noticed something about "burning mouth syndrome". Burning mouth syndrome typically occurs in the absence of any detectable change or abnormality of the affected areas of the mouth, usually the tongue. So the presence of sores usually means that a patient does not have burning mouth syndrome. | |

| My mother-in-law has what I think is called burning mouth syndrome. Burning mouth or Burning mouth Syndrome is a very complex and poorly understood problem. As mentioned certain drugs can cause oral dryness as can certain autoimmune disease and thus may be causally associated with BMS. | |

Burning Mouth Syndrome is a clinical finding. There are specific research centers in the USA concentrated in understanding possible disease process and treating patients with this syndrome. Current treatment involves controlling the acidic/basic balance in the oral cavity through special medications and mouth rinses. | |

Radiation therapy to the head and neck region does not seem to be a significant cause of burning mouth syndrome, which is thought to be a sensory neuropathy (problem with abnormal function of the sensory nerves that supply the oral region — harmless, but annoying). Dry mouth often predisposes a person to oral candidiasis (yeast infection), and this frequently can cause a burning sensation. | |

While you did not mention your age or sex, a condition known as burning mouth syndrome often will have taste disturbances, including decreased ability to taste. If this is part of burning mouth syndrome, the fact that the loss of taste returned after the steroids was probably coincidental - the taste sensation in all likelihood would have returned anyhow. | I was looking for answers to my symptoms and it seems that the closest things would be oral yeast or burning mouth syndrome. salty things burn and my mouth and tongue feels swollen. What you are describing is much more likely to be burning mouth syndrome than a yeast infection. | |

Thanks Patients with burning mouth syndrome describe wide variations in their symptoms. The best way to confirm a diagnosis of burning mouth syndrome is to have a dentist or dental specialist examine the areas that "burn" (in your case the lips and the tongue) to be sure there is no visible sign of abnormality. | |
