Is my mouth guard the problem? (04/16/2007 12:00PM) |
Last year, a sleep specialist created a night mouth guard for me to help with several problems I have: TMJ, teeth grinding, headaches and snoring which wakes me up many times during the night. My tongue and lips and overall mouth get so dry during the night since I know my mouth naturally falls open during the night and I am breathing through my mouth as well as my nose. My lips are now cracked and painful on one corner of my mouth and are not healing and I am experiencing several ...

Pain in the roof of the mouth- please help (10/25/2006 04:12PM) |
| around aug 19-2006 or shortly before, I started having pain in the gums that went to the teeth, and then upper roof mouth pain, burning, pulsating, aching. the pain did subside, the dentist, looked at my mouth, seen nothing, took xrays all was fine, with the teeth and gums, now the pain is back again, this time worse, aching, burning, pulsating, stinging, on the roof of my mouth mainly, along with itching episodes when what I call the mouth attack is over. On the other hand, few patients... | |

Tongue biopsy (04/04/2005 04:01PM) |
| The only paper that directly looked at this issue by examining the DNA of biopsy samples from patients with lichen planus and oral cancer did NOT find any evidence supporting a link between these two conditions. Oral cancer and precancerous changes can look identical to the oral lesions of lichen planus. Therefore, I recommend review of such biopsies by an oral and maxillofacial pathologist whenever possible to take advantage of their specialized training ... | |

Smoking and the mouth (04/30/2008 01:55PM) |
I am writing in response to your question of smoking and the relationship to alteration of oral mucosa and development of pathologies of the oral cavity. The continuum covers the direct effects of smoke and drying action of heated air/smoke to oral cancer. The by-products of smoking have been shown to produce molecular changes in response to the smoke that are associated with epithelial inflammation, periodontal inflammation and alteration of immune responses, salivary gland irritation, ...

Transfering oral-cancer causing HPV (04/09/2008 02:48PM) |
| Hi, Can a woman contract HPV by having oral sex with a man? As you may know, cancer of the cervix in women is highly related to HPV infection, and we believe that the same is true for a subset of oral/throat cancers where there is also an association with HPV, especially the high risk types (HPV types 16 and 18). The overall prevalence of oral cancer however in the general population is very small in comparison to the prevalence of HPV so the overall chances of developing oral ... | |

Swelling underneath tongue (05/11/2007 01:32PM) |
| Is it very common that snuff use would lead to cancer underneath the tongue. Large population studies looking at people who used the much more popular moist snuff have almost always shown no apparent increase in the oral cancer rate compared to people who have never used any tobacco products. However, 20% of people who develop oral cancer (usually on one side of the tongue) have not used tobacco in any form, so even if the risk of oral cancer is minimal when using moist snuff, that ... | |

Papules on hard palate (03/24/2008 12:56PM) |
| Also, what is the risk of cancer from oral HPV? The risk of oral cancer from HPV appears to be much less than that associated with HPV infections of the uterine cervical mucosa. A very small subset of oral cancer patients - young adults with cancers of the oropharyngeal (tonsilar) area - seem to have a high frequency of HPV in their tumors, however this is a rather rare presentation of oral cancer. | |

Tongue (03/21/2005 01:15PM) |
| Also, I have a small bump on the tip of my tongue that is different looking. My Primary Doctor says it looks like a taste bud on the side of my tongue. If you are in a region that is far from an oral pathologist's office, then you might want to see an oral surgeon. If the oral surgeon is not sure what the lesions are, then a biopsy can be done and sent to an oral pathology laboratory. | |

Tongue Lesions (10/04/2004 11:41AM) |
| Sometimes a mild yeast infection develops around the edge of the ulcer, which can delay healing. If the biopsy was sent to an oral pathology laboratory, the yeast infection probably would have been identified microscopically by the oral pathologist. If all of these recommendations have been followed and the ulcer persists, it sometimes has to be removed completely by an oral surgeon so the edges of the wound can be sutured together for better healing. | |

Oral health education? (04/01/2006 11:32AM) |
| Hi, I`m a dental nurse studying Oral Health Education in the UK. Can you advise me on the best method of evaluating a patient after the initial oral health examination? Every patient should have a comprehensive oral exam to include a head and neck exam. |
