St. John`s Wort, PhytoEstrogen, or Pempro? (01/30/2000 10:48AM)
I had this same problem two years ago and because of my age I was afraid of HRT, so I began taking St. John`s Wort and the hot flashes subsided. After about two years, I discontinued the St. John`s and about two months ago I started having periods, hot flashes, and I cannot sleep. St. John`s Wort (SJW) is thought to be most like an antidepressant rather than something specific for hot flashes.

However, for many women the hot flashes do come back when they stop the medication, and we are not recommending women take hormones forever.   You have identified important triggers for you hot flashes.   If the result is not satisfactory, the SSRI class of medications also helps to reduce the frequency of hot flashes.

Hot flash when food reaches lower G.I. (02/20/2006 11:52AM)
My godmother (who knows I`m a good researcher) wants to know if it`s common to experience a hot flash when the rectum is under pressure, due to "gas". She says if she takes Beano, it prevents the hot flashes. I have not heard of GI symptoms causing hot flashes apart from hot, spicey foods and alcohol intake.

What to do for hot flashes (07/03/2006 10:12AM)
Since then, I have been suffering severely with hot flashes and night sweats.

I'm assuming that you are relatively young, but having your ovaries removed gives a sudden surgical menopause that can result in signficant hot flashes, such as you describe.

I will give you some suggestions for dealing with the hot flashes and night sweats, but it won't stop them.

Stopping PRT after surgical menopause (04/03/2007 09:54AM)
I tried 5 years ago to wean myself off the Premarin but the hot flashes returned and I began taking the Premarin again. However, once I stopped taking the Premarin completely, the hot flashes returned, as strong as ever.   You might try alternating 0.45 mg, with 0.625 mg, then 0.45 mg every day.

Hot flashes at 59 (01/08/2007 01:16PM)
After a year of little sleep and severe hot flashes that went on every hour starting like a fire in my head and moving down my entire body where I would literally have to change the sheets.

Some of the SSRI medications and gabapentin have been used off label to help with hot flashes.

Also look for triggers for your flashes:  getting too warm will trigger them, especially at night; avoid turtle neck shirts, working under bright lights, spicy foods, alcohol.

Always hot (07/14/2005 09:57PM)
I haven`t had problems with night sweats or hot flashes but I am just always hot. I`ve searched your website to see if having "hot hands" is a characteristic of any particular problem or disease, but so far I haven`t found anything.   If your personal physician cannot help, you can always see different physician for another opinion.
