Calcification (06/27/2002 08:19AM)
I went on to find out about what my doctor has told me is benign--my mammogram a year ago showed a calcification in my right breast--which that doctor did not bother telling me--this year when I had my mammogram my new doctor did tell me and went back on my past mammograms to see when it had shown up if at all on past mammograms------other than tell me I need to go in and get a mammogram every six months, he wouldn`t really answer my questions about what calcification means. Calcification ...

Ultrasound vs. Mammogram (05/19/2008 11:36AM)
I have very dense breast tissue, and mammograms are extremely painful.

Mammograms and ultrasounds look at the breast in different ways.   The mammogram is still the best way to look at all aspects of the breast for the lowest cost.

Breast examination by a doctor (10/04/2000 08:03AM)
A breast exam by a health care provider is recommended every year after the age of 40. Before the age of 40, a breast exam would only be part of a physical. Mammograms should be started at an earlier age if the woman`s mother and/or sister had premenopasual breast cancer. For example, if your mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 40, you would start mammograms at age 30. You are doing the right thing by performing self breast exam every month.

Nodule in left breast (11/29/2007 10:21AM)
Hi, I am 40 and had my first mammogram this month, and the mammogram found a 8mm nodule in the left breast. I was then scheduled for a ultrasound/mammogram, and they couldn`t find anything via ultrasound, but the radiologist showed me the mammogram and said that it is probably benign and to come back in 6 months, and he said that the nodule was only 3mm not 8mm. In this case, the standard recommendation is to repeat the mammogram in 6 months to make sure that the area hasn't changed.

Mammogram results (04/09/2000 11:36AM)
I have no obvious symptoms of breat cancer and do not have any close relatives with any types of cancer.Last week I had my 1st baseline mammogram and just received a letter today saying that they would like to do further evaluation via x-ray or ultrasound. There are other benign or noncancerous conditions that look like cancer on a mammogram. I congratulate you for having your baseline mammogram at age 41. Every woman should have a baseline mammogram at the age of 40 or soon after.

Should I be concerned? (03/01/2007 12:33PM)
Screening mammograms are generally not performed routinely in women until the age of 40.  However, mammogram may be appropriate in younger women with a striking family history or who have masses in the breast that require evaluation.   The problem with the mammogram in younger women is that the breast tissue is often very dense, and very little fat is present (in older women, the breast becomes fatty replaced).   New masses, however, should always be evaluated by a physician, ...

What are mammogram screening guidelines (07/31/2007 09:39AM)
Organizations promote different guidelines for screening mammograms. ACS states Women 40 years and over should have an annual mamm and others say a baseline mamm needs to be done at age 35-40. With the density of breast tissue in younger females, when should a healthy woman with no previous or family history begin screening mammograms?

The ACS also recommends a baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40.

Abnormal diag. mammogram, normal ultrasound (03/05/2007 10:47AM)
It is possible to have vague findings on a mammogram that turn out to be normal breast tissue rather than a "nodule or mass".  Usually an ultrasound is done after an abnormality is found on mammogram as was the case with you.   If nothing is found on the ultrasound, then the original mammogram finding either represented normal tissue or it is possible that there was a mass which was too small to see on ultrasound.   You are correct, MRI does have a higher rate of ...

My wife`s health (03/08/2005 12:11PM)
Small cysts are seen in left breast on sonographic study suggestive of benign lesions. No well defined soft tissue mass seen in both breast on mammography study. On sonography examination, no cyst is seen in right breast on present study. COMPARED WITH PREVIOUS EXAMINATION, THERE IS NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN THE SIZE OF CYST SEEN IN LEFT BREAST.

Are mammogram and ultrasound 100% accurate? (07/19/1998 12:03PM)
Breasts of women in their 20's are mostly made up of breast tissue, making them very dense. A lump in the middle of dense breast tissue often won't show up on the mammogram because the tissue hides it. The problem with the ultrasound when the mammogram does not show the lesion is that the technician cannot ultrasound the whole breast accurately.
