Dairy and Calcium Paradox? (08/25/1999 08:01AM)
Robert Heaney, professor of medicine at the Creighton University School of Medicine and a proponent of high dairy consumption, found in a study he co-authored that the "single most important determinate of the rate of bone gain" in young women was not the amount of calcium consumed but the ratio of calcium to protein. That`s why populations with low calcium consumption manage to form healthy skeletons, and high calcium consumers don`t develop bones like mastodons. The Food and ...

Evista (09/19/2005 09:33AM)
Even though the risk is approximately double, the absolute number of women having a blood clot is small.   In a huge study of women on hormone therapy (the Women's Health Initiative or WHI), women ages 50-59 who were taking the placebo pill for one year had a rate of blood clots of fewer than one in a thousand.   Among women in their 60s, the rate of blood clots is approximately 2 per 1,000 per year.

Treatment recommendations (07/03/2007 09:52AM)
In general a DXA scan is recommended for women for women who are 65 and older or for women younger than that if they are menopausal and have other risk factors.

In premenopausal women a DXA scan is recommended only in women who are high risk; e.g. those who are having unexplained fractures, those who have anorexia nervosa or those who have to take steroids for a specific health problem.

Actonel and vitamin supplements (06/05/2006 01:29PM)
A standard recommendation for calcium is 1200 mg/day for postmenopausal women, no more than 500 mg at a time.   Women should take at least 400 IU of vitamin D per day.   Vitamin D recommendations are being reviewed, and we may see higher recommendations in the near future.

Losing virginity (07/05/2007 09:09AM)
Some women find it helpful to become more familiar with their body by using tampons for their menses.   Start with a small tampon and increase to a large tampon.   A few women have an unusually small opening that may require a minor surgical procedure to allow comfortable intercourse.

Bone Density (12/28/2000 08:50AM)
Can a woman who is over 65 and does regular weight bearing exercise gain bone density without taking calcium supplrments? It is possible, although unlikely, that a postmenopausal woman on no medication or supplement to prevent bone loss can exercise sufficiently vigorously to prevent bone loss at all skeletal sites. Hormone replacement (07/26/2000 03:32PM)
The answer to your question depends on many factors such as your age, your present bone density, your general health and your risk factors for osteoporosis. For women with normal bone density or mild osteopenia and few risk factors a healthy diet, calcium, vitamin D, and exercise would suffice. For women who already have osteoporosis other medications such as Actonel, Fosamax, or Miacalcin are options depending on the woman`s particular situation.

Bonebuilding Medication for Young Women (05/03/2002 10:23AM)
I have it (age 57). My daughter has osteopenia (age 32). Her doctor suggests Actonel. Most experts do not put premenopausal women on osteoporosis medications unless they actually have osteoporosis or are very high risk by being on steroid medications or are found to have some underlying medical problem. It would be important to know that there were no other predisposing factors for your family members with osteoporosis - like excess loss of calcium from the kidneys (a history of kidney ...
