Flaxseed (09/15/2008 11:12AM)

Flaxseed is good for your heart because most of the fat in flaxseed is in the form of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is an essential fatty acid (meaning our bodies can't make this fat, we must get it from foods) and it is a precursor to the heart-disease fighting omega-3 fatty acids. There are flax supplements - one contains ground flaxseed, the other flaxseed oil. The ground flaxseed pills have the same benefits as ground flaxseed, except you need to take several capsules (...

Losing weight while hypothryoidic (01/24/1999 11:17PM)
Before considering a weight-loss drug, please keep in mind that the goal of any good weight loss program is to lose body fat, preserve and/or increase muscle tone, and change your poor eating and exercise habits to good ones that you can live with for a LIFETIME. According to the Healthy Weight Journal publication "Health Risks of Weight Loss," most treatment programs that use the nondiet approach focus on three factors: feeling good about oneself, eating well in a natural, relaxed way, and ...

What is a good diet? (03/26/1999 08:01AM)
When you say "diet", I am assuming you mean some sort of meal plan that will help you lose weight, or achieve optimal health. Most people consider "diet" to mean a fad diet or meal plan which is to be followed for a certain amount of time to lose weight. Fad diets (such as low carbohydrate or high protein "diets") are not a good idea for long term weight loss, and can be detrimental to your health.

7 year old daughter is in an eating frenzy! (07/28/2008 10:49AM)
She will eat all the time if I don`t "distract" her. "Eat this, it`s good for you") My husband and son are good at naturally limiting their food intake and usually make good food choices. The RD will evaluate your daughter's food intake and eating behaviors, as well as physical activity.

`Good`Cholesterol (05/20/2004 10:36AM)
I am a male, 28 years old , in good shape (or so I thought) I recently found out that my "bad" cholesterol is well within the "safe" zone, however my "good" cholesterol is very low (23). My doctor wants to put me on medication to help raise it.   Similar questions about cholesterol and HDL have been answered on NetWellness.   Regular exercise (at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity 5 or more days/week) will increase HDL, so continue to ...

Excersize Pattern (03/26/2001 03:17PM)
It`s good that you have chosen low fat dip, but it may be difficult to digest if eaten prior to exercise (ie. Most athletes consume at least 1-3 (8 oz) glasses prior to exercising, 1-2 glasses during exercise, and more after exercising. Other foods to include in your diet include low fat protein sources from lean meats, low fat dairy foods (milk, yogurt, low fat cheese), nuts/seeds or peanut butter and dried beans.

Diet to reduce risk and strengthen body (11/03/2003 10:39AM)
The best `diet` (or dietary habits) to adopt to prevent cancer and most other chronic diseases is a low fat, high fiber diet. Finally, try to limit total fat and especially saturated fat in your diet. "Good" fats to include in your diet to help prevent cancer include omega-3-fatty acids found in fatty fish (such as tuna and salmon), canola oil, flaxseeds and flaxseed oil and walnuts.

Help!!! (01/30/2002 11:33AM)
Since you`re not fond of dieting, it may be easiest to cut back on high fat `junk` foods such as regular soft drinks, candy, cookies, chips and other high calorie foods. Your meals should be balanced and should include at least 7 servings of grains (bread, cereal, rice, noodles), 2-4 servings of fruit, 3-5 servings of vegetables, 3 servings of dairy foods (milk, yogurt, cheese) and 2 meat servings. SAFE weight loss is no more than 1/2-1 pound of weight per week- so losing 4 pounds/week is ...

Weakened immune system due to vegetarian diet (07/08/1999 07:55AM)
Assuming you are going to continue to eat a vegetarian diet, try to include more dried beans or lentils which provide the protein your diet is lacking. Continue to take a multi-vitamin daily, and make sure it has 100% of the RDAs for iron, zinc, B-6 and B-12. In order to optimize your iron intake while continuing a vegetarian diet, eat foods high in vitamin C along with non-animal iron foods. Egg yolks contain cholesterol, but they also provide vitamin D, vitamin K and vitamin A. In ...
