Shrinkage

11/03/2004

Question:

My height was measured the other day. I`m 1 1/2 inches shorter than I was about eighteen years ago. I`m currently 36 years old. Active in very good health. Is there reason to be concerned about the shrinkage?

Answer:

First of all, be sure the measurement was accurate.  If it is confirmed in another setting, consider whether you have had any disk compression.  That is a common cause of height loss.  Did you ever have a back injury with potential vertebral compression?  Also consider whether you might have some scoliosis.  All of these conditions can lead to reduced height.  It would be worth reviewing your height loss with your physician.
