Extended menstrual cycle

02/10/2006

Question:

For as long as I can remeber my menstral cycle has lasted 5 days. Now for some reason I am going on my 11 day. Is this some thing I should worry about. There is no history of cancer in my family. Thank You for your time

Answer:

In general menstrual cycles remain fairly constant, but many things can disrupt the balance. For each menstrual cycle to occur, many things must take place, including your brain and ovaries communicating with each other. Because so many things must happen, many women have an occasional abnormal cycle. This can be a missed period or a period that lasts too long. This is the most common reason for irregular bleeding. Unplanned pregnancy can also be a cause of abnormal vaginal bleeding. I am unsure based on the details in your question whether this a risk for you or not. Infections, such as sexually transmitted diseases can cause irregular bleeding as well. Ovarian cysts or cervical polyps can also cause prolonged menstrual bleeding. Please get evaluated by a doctor to ensure there are no problems occurring.
