Tanning bed reaction

09/07/2006

Question:

I recently layed in the tanning and a few minutes later I began to itch, then in a couple of hours bumps apperared and continued to itch really bad, they went away over night what could be the cause?

Answer:

Without seeing the rash, it is impossible to know what you may have had. Given the fact that the rash resolved so quickly, one possibility includes a reaction to ultraviolet light. There are different types of reactions to light, one of which is hives (this is rare from ultraviolet light); another is a reaction because of medications you are on.

A separate possibility is a type of heat rash. I would recommend avoiding tanning beds from now on. If the rash recurs, see your board certified dermatologist.
