Hanging skin under my tongue

03/27/2006

Question:

Hello, I noticed a little piece of hanging skin under my tongue. It is loceted on one of the two veins that run under your tongue. I noticed that both veins have these little fleshy bumps, but one of them is longer than the rest. It almost looks like taste buds on the bottom of my tongue, if that makes any sense. (It is triangular in shape) I have had this for as long as I can remember. Any idea what it could be? Thank you

Answer:

From what you are describing, this “hanging skin” probably is a part of what is known as the “fimbriated folds.” These are normal structures that are found on the undersurface of the tongue, on either side. While they are usually of the same size, it is not unusual to find one that is slightly longer. No treatment is necessary.
