Question:

My 78 year old mother has severe osteoporosis. It is so severe that kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are not an option. The doctor has basically said there is nothing that can be done but treat her pain (which is severe). She can still walk a little, but basically relies on her wheelchair. What should we expect as far as her life style going forward? And, will this effect other organs (i.e. heart, lungs, etc.)?

Answer:

Sorry to hear that your mother has severe osteoporosis.  Some people with severe osteoporosis have difficulty with breathing and some have difficulty with an early feeling of fullness when eating.  Hopefully she will not have any hip fractures since she has a wheelchair.  If she is going to walk around a lot, there are products called hip protectors that may protect the hip in the event of a fall.
