Shyness in Children

10/24/2007

Question:

My son is 5 years old and he is shy not to the extreme but when it comes to participating in class or introduce himself he covers himself with his hands and especially on any social event he does not want to go. He cries and he wants to be apart from the party.

Answer:

Yes indeed your child sounds shy but shyness is common (over 20% of children) and can be somewhat overcome by gentle persuasion and persistence on the part of parents. Even though it might be uncomfortable for your child at first, the more he joins in and experiences successful social encounters the easier it will become. At this point it is premature to seek professional advice but if this situation continues into first grade I would certainly do so.
