Disability

Question:

Many dentists are reluctant (unprepared) to treat a patient with a disability. My daughter is 11, severely cognitively disabled, and has never received good dental care (she`s seen 3 dentists). She doesn`t eat much by mouth (g-tube) and I brush her teeth as well as she`ll allow, but her teeth are grungy and need braces. How do I find a quality dentist that can deal with disabilty?

Answer:

You are to be complimented for your attention to your daughter’s oral health in spite of her many other developmental challenges.  Pediatric dentists are specialists in dentistry who are well trained to treat children with disabilities.  Consult your local dental society for contact information on pediatric dentists in your area.
