Adderall and General Anesthesia
09/16/2008 |
Question:
I am having surgery in 3 days for a meniscal repair (not open) I also am taking adderall 30 mg twice a day. My doctor told me to stop the adderall the day before surgery. Could it still affect my surgery?
Answer:
I cannot offer you any advice specific to your situation. Unfortunately NetWellness is not that sort of service. As a rule of thumb, after 4-5 “half-lives” of a drug have elapsed, relatively small amounts of the drug are still in your system. The elimination half life of Adderall, a stimulant, is 10 hours, so after 3 or 4 days there isn’t much left and any danger of drug interaction with anesthetic medications will be lessened significantly.
