Dear Doctor

I have been a case of hypothyroidism since February of ’08. I was initially diagnosed and was put on eltroxin 100 micromg for 3 months. After this, my level became normal and my doctor instructed me to go on 25 micomg which I continued for 4 months. Afterwards, I started getting symptoms of low thyroid and when did a test I found that my TSH 17, T3 and T4 were normal. I then started eltroxin again, 100 micrmg for 3 days now. I have been trying to conceive for the past 5 months . Doctor could you please explain to me how long the thyroid will take to normalize. Can I still try to conceive? What can I do now to get pregnant. All my other hormonal reports and ultrasound scans are normal and positive. Please help, I am desperately trying to have a baby.

Answer:

Once you change your dose of medication, the overall effect should be evident approximately 6 weeks later.  You should have a normal TSH and free T4 before attempting to conceive.  If your menstrual cycles have been normal, it is unlikely that the thyroid abnormalities were interfering with your ability to conceive.  Typically, a patient is considered infertile if she fails to conceive after 12 months of trying.
