Is labial synechiae congenital?

10/30/2008

Question:

Is labial synechiae congenital? Would a babay girl aged 1 year 2 months having a labial synechiae have it right from her birth? Or can it be acquired later after birth also.

Is it documented fact / rule in medical science that labial synechiae has to be congenital.

Answer:

Occasionally newborn girls are found to have fused labia, but the vast majority of the time they are acquired. If there appears to be congenital labial fusion, it might be necessary to determine whether the baby has a disorder of sexual development.
