Treatment for Pinched Nerve

12/23/2008

Question:

Will any type of shot help me with the pain of a pinched nerve. My doctor has told me to take Tylenol and wait until I visit with my neurologists but the numbing pain down my leg is making it difficult to walk or balance without a cane. What about steroids?

Answer:

An epidural steroid injection at the level of the herniated disc is usually helpful. Oral steroids have been tried but the evidence in their favor is weak. You should have had an MRI by now. If there is progressive weakness or loss of bowel or bladder control, you may need to see a spine surgeon expeditiously.
