Question:

when I have what seems to be a seizure, should I go to an emergency room? would they be able to identify if my symptoms are from a seizure?

Answer:

Most patients with seizures do not need to go to the emergency room after every seizure. I would discuss with your treating neurologist when you should go to the emergency room. I tell my patients to go to the ER if there is an injury from a seizure, if the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes or if there are more than one seizure and the patient does not wake up between seizures. An ER visit often leads to unnecessary tests (CT scans, blood work).
