Swollen Submandibular Gland or Lymph Nodes

09/02/2009

Question:

What are some common causes of swollen submandibular glands and or lymph nodes? I am 39 yrs old and have had swollen, firm knot under my jaw (left side) for +/- 8 yrs. Knot is about 1.5-2CM. Right side knot is smaller >1CM. Thanks for your input.

Answer:

A “knot” under the jaw may just be your submandibular gland. It is not uncommon to feel a difference between the two sides as one can become more prominent as we age. A thorough head and neck examination by an ENT and possibly an ultrasound of the neck could give the answer.
