4 Month Old 2nd UTI

10/13/2009

Question:

My daughter is 4.5 months and she is showing symptoms of another UTI. She first had one at 2.5 months. I brought her into the ER for a high fever of 104.5. She was admitted for 3 days until the culture came backĀ Ecoli. She was given an antibiotic for 13 days. When she went for her follow up the infection was still there so we did another course of antibiotics. At her follow up, they drew urine from a cath that showed the UTI was gone. Now 2 moonths later she is running a fever once again. I feel it`s a UTI and her doctor ran some of herĀ urine. I am waiting for the culture results. I take precautions in her bath time and make sure the bathtub is clean. I`m super stressed! What can be causing this???

Answer:

It sounds like she needs a urinary tract evaluation. Many pediatric urologists perform a renal sonogram to check for hydronephrosis or urinary tract obstruction, and a voiding cystourethrogram to check for urinary reflux, which is present in approximately 40% of girls with a urinary tract infection and fever. An alternative method that is becoming more popular is to perform a nuclear kidney scan, and if there is any abnormality, then proceed with the voiding cystourethrogram.
