Dry Socket

10/13/2009

Question:

Is there anything I can do at home to relieve a dry socket? How long does a dry socket usually last? Is it dangerous to let a dry socket heal on its own or by treating it at home?

Answer:

If you are not running a high fever (over 100 degrees orally) and you are not noticeably swollen, your socket will probably heal itself ultimately.  Packing dry sockets usually helps reduce pain temporarily, but it still takes time to heal.  You could try an over-the-counter “dressing” or toothache drops or gel.  If you can get it in the hole (socket) after rinsing (cleaning) out any debris, it may feel better.

Sometimes high doses (500-100mg) of tylenol (acetaminophen) and motrin (Ibuprofen) 600-800 mg taken together every 4-6 hours, if your stomach and other health histories and medications allow, will help.
