Why Indapamide in Place of HCT 25 mg

12/04/2009

Question:

Sir, I am hypertensive male with techycardia and on Tenormin 100 Losartan 100 Amldepine 1- mg and HCT 12.5 mg. BP was hitherto controlled. Recently, I have a BP elevation in the evening i.e 145/95 and the like. Internist deleted HCT 12.5 and introduced Lozol 1.5 SR. My query is why instead of making HCT 12.5 to 25 mg, he added an expensice Lozol 1.5 SR. Is there any harm in taking HCT 25. I do not have cholestrol, no gout,no diabetes no thyroid or any proble, I seek your guidance for education purpose only I shall be oblged to receive it Thanx in anticipation

Answer:

I do not know of any specific medical reason for your physician to make the change between these two diuretics. I can make a guess that, since your blood pressure was a little bit higher in the evening, he wanted to give you something that may last a little longer than the HCTZ. The SR stands for “sustained release” and may provide a longer duration than the HCTZ.

You should not hesitate to ask your prescriber if you are ever unsure of why they are changing a medication.
