What does hemangiomas at T8 and T2 mean?

12/17/2009

Question:

I have had 4 back surgeries I had a spinal stimulator. They took it out in March 2009. I`m in pain all the time. I don`t understand what hemangioma is? I have mild disk bulging at T3/4 and T4/5 on T-spine MRI. On C-spine w+w/o iv contrast. On C-spine hemangioma particularly at T2. There is minimal bulging of the disk annuli C3-4, C4-5, C5-6 and C6-7 with minimal impression on the thecal sac without spinal stenosis or cord impingement. I have minimal narrowing at C5-6. Can you please explain this to me. I`m on 25 years old with two kids. I`m in school to be a CSI. My 19 month old weighs 26 pounds. And, it is very bad when you don`t even want to pick your own kid up because of pain. That`s sad. Thanks

Answer:

Hello, thank you for your question. It is not appropriate for me to try to diagnose your pain on this website. We also do not provide individual MRI interpretations. I can answer your specific question about hemangiomas. They are benign, common, abnormal areas in the vertebrae (spinal bones) that have blood in them. These are incidentally found very frequently in people having MRIs done for other reasons. With very rare exceptions they are not thought to cause pain. The most common exception is when they become very large and can actually weaken the structure of the bone. This is quite rare. If you have not already, you should ask your primary care provider to refer you to a spine specialist who can help determine the cause of your pain. Good luck.
