Can a person live alone with MG?

01/25/2010

Question:

Can a person live alone with mg?

Answer:

Yes, people with myasthenia gravis can safely live alone. In fact, I think it is risky practice to rely on family members to monitor how a patient with severe MG is doing. When MG is severe, excellent neurologist/patient communication is needed so that hospitalization can be used if life threatening changes occur. This is not to say that family does not provide great help in many cases – particularly with elderly patients who have other medical conditions and many medications. It is just that they should not be put in a position of monitoring a critically ill loved one. That’s what professionals are for. Hope this helps. Take care.
