Reading Prescriptions

01/26/2010

Question:

I got a prescription for Dicetel and it said 1-2 tabs po qid prn X100 tabs R2. I know what some of it means like R2 is repeat by 2. Can you tell me what this means?

Answer:

Most prescription abbreviations are shorthand for Latin terms. You can find a list of some of the more common abbreviations here: http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=5033.

In this case, the prescription reads “Take 1-2 tablets by mouth (PO) four times daily (QID) as needed (PRN). Dispense 100 tabs with 2 refills.”
