Hallucinations and Dementia

03/22/2010

Question:

My mother is 84 and has been diagnosed with early dementia. She has been prescribed the Exelon patch but does not use it consistently. She has had some hallucinations in the past but this week she has had the same type of hallucination twice in 4 days. She claims to “see” people in her home that she knows are deceased (all relatives including my dad). She says “they” are on the couch in her living room but do not speak or talk to her. They sometimes move from one chair to the other but never look at her directly. She attempts to speak with them and interact with them but also says she knows “they” aren`t real. Is this a normal symptom of dementia or something else?
