BUN and Creatinine Levels

06/25/2010

Question:

I received my blood work from the doctor. My GFR is 48, creatinine level is 1.3, and BUN is 14. Can you explain these levels to me and tell me what is a normal level? I am female, 5`7″ and weight 175.

Answer:

According to the National Kidney Foundation, normal results for GFR range from 90 – 120 mL/min. Older people will have lower normal GFR levels, because GFR decreases with age. I cannot know why you have a low GFR as there are multiple causes, some are reversible. Please review this with your doctor as a GFR of 48 is lower than I would expect, even with age.
