Telmisartan

08/11/2010

Question:

Does telmisartan increase uric acid and creatinine levels in the blood.

Answer:

From the data available at this point, telmisartan does not appear to affect blood concentrations of uric acid. A similar drug called losartan has been shown to mildly decrease levels of uric acid in the blood. Therefore, it is possible that telmisartan may affect uric acid, but would most likely decrease uric acid levels if anything.

Telmisartan can affect blood levels of creatinine. Telmisartan and other angiotensin II receptor blockers can cause a slight increase in serum creatinine levels during the initial weeks of therapy. This increase is normal and only problematic if a significant increase occurs. Your physician may monitor your blood levels to detect any abnormal rise in serum creatinine.
