Septated cyst in fetus

10/28/2010

Question:

Hi, I am writing regarding a condition noted for my sister in the ultarsound conducted during 31 weeks, 6 days of pregnancy. Her amniotic fluid was recorded as `adequate`at AFI 12.2. But a fetal anomaly was noted: 3.4 X 3.4 cm septated cyst in the inferior to the left fetal kidney (? Mesenteric/? Ovarian). What does this mean? Is this a cuase for concern? What future steps do you suggest?

Answer:

Without viewing the images, it is difficult to make a definitive diagnosis. However, the description does not suggest that the baby has a malignant tumor.

Based on your information, it would seem most appropriate to let her deliver the baby and then evaluate the baby with an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI. Most probably it is not a serious condition. I would not recommend early delivery.
