Post Op Hospital Stay Following Double Amputa

01/13/2011

Question:

what time period can be expected for post op hospital care

Answer:

The post operative recovery can vary greatly from patient to patient depending on the patient’s physical and medical status prior to surgery and the level of the amputation. The ultimate goal is to get the patient functioning at the highest level possible post op. The healthier the patient and the lower the amputation level, the quicker that patient will recover to a baseline status. Most patients with bilateral amputations are sicker and usually older and recover very slowly. They will usually be in the hospital 5 to 6 days and will then need to go to a rehab facility for days to weeks. The important thing is to be realistic about the rehab potential and the ultimate goals. Bilateral amputees, unless they are young, do not become walkers. They can transfer and get around some at home but usually require a wheelchair for “out of home” travel.
