Eutirox (Levotiroxine) vs Armour Thyroid

06/27/2011

Question:

I have taken Levotiroxine (levothyroxine) 75 mcg for 3 years now . I have heard that Armour Thyroid is better quality and (than)  levothyroxine. What mgs amount(dose) should I take of Armour Thyroid to replace my 75mcg of levotiroxine (levothyroxine)?

Answer:

Armour Thyroid is a natural hormone, derived from the thyroid glands of animals raised for food, and Levothyroxine is a synthetic hormone. Armour thyroid is not preferred by doctors because it has unreliable potencies, inconsistent clinical effects, and more side effects.

Levothyroxine is the best choice for these reasons. The usual daily maintenance of Armour thyroid for adults is 60-180 mg. A simple conversion from one product to the other is not possible. Switching products would require careful monitoring and dose adjustments. You need to talk to your doctor if you still would like to switch to Armour Thyroid.
