Central Spinal Cord Damage and DBS

04/05/2011

Question:

I fell and had central spinal cord damage, will this prevent me from having dbs surgery.

Answer:

With DBS therapy, it will not be possible to have MRI of the spine. The spinal cord damage may need to be addressed prior to having DBS surgery. Your current health care providers can help you determine if anything needs to be done prior to pursing DBS surgery. If not already done, you also would benefit from visiting with your Parkinson’s disease specialist and DBS surgeon again to review your symptoms plus expectations of DBS therapy.
