Drug Interactions

If you take mucinex, can you take benadryl?

Thank you for contacting NetWellness. There are not any drug interactions between Mucinex (guaifenesin) and Benadryl (diphenhydramine).

Mucinex is a cough expectorant that is used to help relieve productive or wet coughs. It helps thin and loosen the mucus in your lungs, allowing you to cough more productively and relieve chest congestion.

Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an antihistamine used to relieve runny nose, sneezing, itchy, watery eyes, and/or itching of the nose and throat associated with allergy symptoms. Benadryl can make you drowsy, so use caution when driving or operating machinery, and avoid drinking alcohol, as this can increase your sedation. Be aware that Benadryl makes products that contain added ingredients to the diphenhydramine, such as phenylephrine and acetaminophen. Talk to your local pharmacist about choosing a Benadryl product that best fits your needs.

We encourage you to create a good relationship with your local pharmacist who can be a good source of information about your medications. If you have any other medications that you take, please contact your local pharmacist for any possible interactions. If you need immediate information, your local pharmacist may be in the best position to assist you.
